Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Chimney Cleaning in Silver Lake, CA | Firebrick Chimney Sweep
We clean and service HeatShield-resurfaced chimneys throughout Silver Lake, and we’re an independent provider, not a manufacturer affiliate. That matters here because Silver Lake’s 1920s and 1930s Spanish Colonial and Craftsman chimneys fail differently than newer flues do. The HeatShield coating itself is rarely the problem. What fails is what’s behind it: the original clay tile, the stucco surround, the mortar joints nobody has looked at in thirty years. If your flue has been resurfaced and you want an honest assessment of whether the coating is still doing its job, call us at (866) 520-4943.
Why Silver Lake Residents Choose Us for HeatShield Service
Most chimney companies in Silver Lake will sweep a flue and leave. We’re not wired that way. Our owner, Nelson Quijada, grew up off Cahuenga Boulevard and has spent two decades working on the same hillside bungalows and Spanish Colonial chimneys he passed every day as a kid. When a HeatShield coating is peeling or a flue joint is opening up, he’s seen that exact failure pattern before, usually on a house within a mile of yours. We carry the genuine HeatShield resurfacing system, Hi-Temp formulation, and matching sealant, not an off-brand coating that looks similar in a photo but behaves differently under heat. We sweep it, we repair it. One company, no referrals. And because our full HeatShield sales & service work happens in-house, you’re not waiting on a third party to come back with a coat of something you can’t verify.

Common HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Problems We Solve in Silver Lake
- Coating delamination over original clay tile. A HeatShield coating applied years ago over a wet or poorly cleaned clay liner will eventually let go. When we sweep a Silver Lake Spanish Colonial and the brush pulls down sheets of coating, that tells us the original surface prep was never done right. The storm is already in the flue. Sweeping alone won’t fix it.
- Joint cracking on Craftsman bungalow flues. Older Craftsman chimneys used clay tile with mortar joints that often weren’t keyed properly. HeatShield Hi-Temp or standard coating over those joints cracks first right at the seam. We see this constantly in the hillside cottages east of the reservoir. The fix is repointing before any recoat makes sense.
- Hidden cracks behind old resurfacing. Flues that were resurfaced years ago and never re-inspected can be hiding a cracked original clay tile. During Santa Ana wind events, a glaze of creosote on that crack is a fire waiting on a cold night. We sweep, inspect behind the coating, and tell you what’s actually there.
- Undersized flues that were coated anyway. If a HeatShield coating was applied to an undersized 1920s flue without addressing the narrow firebox, the flue still can’t handle your burning habits. Silver Lake fireplaces were sized for short, occasional wood fires. Resurfacing doesn’t change the physics.
- Water intrusion through the stucco crown. Silver Lake’s exterior stucco chimneys crack at the flue top over time. Water gets behind the clay tile, wets the liner, and the HeatShield coating fails from the back side. We see this on nearly every hillside chimney we inspect after a wet winter. The crown and stucco surround have to be addressed or the resurfacing is temporary.
HeatShield Service in Silver Lake: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Here’s the thing a generic HeatShield page won’t tell you: Silver Lake’s Spanish Colonial and Craftsman chimneys were built with exterior stucco surrounds. When a HeatShield resurfacing or crown repair is done on one of these, the stucco at the flue top is almost always the weak point that lets water in behind the clay. A tract-home suburb with a brick chimney and a flat lot doesn’t see this pattern. A Silver Lake hillside house does, every time. The stucco wicks water. The clay tile behind it stays damp. And a HeatShield coating applied over a liner that’s damp from behind will delaminate in sheets within a few seasons. Nelson Quijada learned to spot this before the brush even goes up. If the stucco crown is cracked and the coating is flaking, you don’t resurface. You fix the water entry first. That’s the difference between a repair that lasts a decade and one that fails by the next Santa Ana season. Our service area covers all of Silver Lake service area, including the hillside streets where this repair pattern is most common.
HeatShield Models & Products We Service in Silver Lake
We work with the full HeatShield line: the standard Ceramic Flue Resurfacing System, the Hi-Temp formulation for solid-fuel and higher-temperature flues, and the matching sealant and joint compound, and we also offer HeatShield repair in Los Angeles. If your flue was resurfaced with one of these, we can inspect it, sweep it, repair the coating, or tell you honestly when a reline is the better spend. We do not use uncertified knockoff coatings. On a clay liner, an off-brand product is a fire risk, not a savings. For Silver Lake turnaround, we carry the genuine system and sealant on the truck, so a small repair patch or joint touch-up usually doesn’t require a second trip.

AfterHeatShield Service Pricing in Silver Lake
HeatShield cleaning and inspection in Silver Lake typically starts at $189 for a standard sweep and goes up based on what we find behind the coating. A Level 2 inspection adds cost because we’re running a camera through the flue and documenting every joint and crack. Creosote removal in a heavily glazed hillside flue takes longer and costs more. Mortar repointing at the flue top or crown repair is quoted separately once we see the actual condition. What we never do is give you a number without looking. Estimates are free. Call (866) 520-4943 and we’ll come out, put eyes on the flue, and give you a real number you can plan around.

FAQs – HeatShield Chimney Cleaning in Silver Lake
Sometimes, and only if the original clay liner is sound, round, and dry behind the coating. A 1920s Spanish Colonial with an intact clay flue and a properly sealed stucco crown is a good candidate. A chimney where the stucco surround has cracked and water has been getting behind the tile is not. We inspect before we recommend, and we’ll tell you plainly if a reline is the honest answer. Call (866) 520-4943 to schedule an assessment.
We can sweep the loose coating and creosote, but that doesn’t fix why it flaked. Flaking usually means the original surface prep was poor or water has been entering behind the coating. Sweeping alone leaves you with a flue that’s still shedding material into the firebox. We’ll clean it, camera it, and show you what the coating is hiding. If it’s just surface wear, fine. If there’s a cracked tile behind it, that changes the recommendation.
Because the clay tile joints on older Craftsman and Spanish Colonial flues weren’t keyed flush, and the coating moves differently than the mortar beneath it. The crack forms at the seam first. It’s a known failure point we see regularly in Silver Lake. The repair is repointing the joint, not adding more coating over the crack. We can do that work in-house.
Yes, and it’s measurable. During Santa Ana events, the air is dry and the wind pulls a stronger draft through the flue. If there’s glazed creosote behind the HeatShield coating or a cracked tile, that’s when a chimney fire is most likely. Silver Lake’s hillside homes sit right in that wind path. We recommend a sweep and inspection before the dry season, not after the first Santa Ana.
Usually, yes. We’ve worked off the exterior stairs near the reservoir more times than we can count. Our crew carries rods and brushes up those stair streets and sets up on sloped roofs that a flat-lot company would never touch. It takes longer, and the access is tighter, but we know how to do it safely. Off the reservoir recently, we carried rods up an exterior stair to a sharply pitched roof over a 1928 Spanish Colonial, where the original clay flue had been resurfaced years earlier and was coming apart in flakes, similar to HeatShield in Hollywood. We swept the loose coating and creosote, found a cracked clay tile behind it at the joint, repointed the mortar, and told the owner a fresh HeatShield coat would only hide the crack. The right answer was a reline. We capped it and waterproofed the crown so the next rain didn’t start the problem over.
